dr dre asked him to give a talk at a music festival, and he did his thing where he researched everything very seriously, and fell in love with hip hop. he did a speech where he called rap ‘poetry with its sleeves rolled up’ and then asked everyone to bear with him while he gave it a try, and blew everyone’s minds with an absolute steamroller of a political protest rap. it sounded like if missy elliot was as angry as eminem.

i woke up SO MAD that it wasn’t real. all i remember is one line: “took everything you could fling at me, didn’t sting, now you can’t do a thing to me.” everything had that internal rhyme and doubled-back cadence, it was like rap fell in love with an irish reel and was trying to impress it.

  • the flag is an idol in which people literally pledge their allegiance to
  • patriotic anthems = hymns
  • the military itself is a treated like a priest class; the “laypeople” are expected to display the utmost respect for their pure existence.
  • indoctrination of children
  • displays of patriotism determines how “faithful” the individual is
  • presence of nationalism at different events (such as sports games, festivals, schools etc…) eerily resembles a theocracy
  • when someone chooses not to partake in a patriotic ritual, they are considered a heretic
