feel like something we don’t talk about enough, at least from a historical perspective, is the fact that before publishing and film and tv decided lgbtq representation was commercially viable, fanfiction filled that void and gave young people a place to see themselves. like if you’re a fifteen-year-old today, you’re listening to mainstream lgbt pop stars, you’re watching popular tv shows with multiple lgbt characters, you can go to the teen section of any bookstore and find scores of recent books about lgbt characters, representing a whole broad array of experiences. when i was fifteen, in 2008, i had my first experience seeing a gay couple represented positively and sympathetically… in a piece of south park fanfiction. like that was literally the very first time i consumed any media about gay people and had my evangelical preconceptions challenged. isn’t that just bananas.
